The solstice just occurred on June 21, which marked the official start of the summer season. This is the time of year when we like to keep space in our lives for the impromptu barbecue at a friend’s house or unexpected visit to the lake. If your bag is already packed and it doesn’t take effort to get ready, it’s a whole lot easier to say ‘Yes!’ to these opportunities as they come up.

There are also great gear and apps that can make summertime entertainment easier and more fun for everyone.

The AllTrails app for iOs and Android provides access to 50,000+ trail maps so you can hike, bike or walk wherever you are.

A Kindle is a great device to have on hand for travel of any kind. Keep it loaded with books so that you or the children with you always have something to read.

The Phoozy thermal phone case protects your phone from overheating in the sun and floats in water. You can use phone protection like this if you’re on a boat, by a pool or even in snow. It also reportedly helps protect your phone against dropping. It fits phones and cases up to 6.4 inches x .5 inch x 3.3 inches.

I know you’re going to have a great time this summer, so if you’re ready to pre-pack your bag in anticipation, here are some suggestions for what to have ready:

  • a towel for each person
  • a blanket or sheet
  • sunscreen
  • sunglasses
  • mini first-aid kit (especially good for young kids or those with bee sting allergies)
  • tissues and wipes
  • filled water bottles
  • bathing suits
  • membership cards or necessary keys
  • cooler and ice packs

If you know your days will include hours by the pool, beach or lake, consider including these items, especially if you have kids or grandkids:

  • goggles
  • sand toys
  • folding chairs

After you return, wash and clean whatever needs it and return them to your bag so you’re ready to go next time adventure calls!
